The hardware we run is something a little bit different, as it is array based rather than a traditional server as most people would know it.

  So what is an array?

EMC Symmetrix DMX1000

An array, or disk array to be more exact is literally what it says, a grouping of disks which in turn is connected to a controller which performs a variety of tasks such as data virtualisation and caching of data for improved performance. An example of a disk array is shown to the right.
What are the specifications of the servers?
We have not got a 'standard' server but the typical server would be equivalent to:

  • 10TB (Terabytes equal roughly 1000GB) storage
  • 4GB ECC protected RAM
  • RAID-6 (Double parity)
  • Dual Opteron Processors
  What about the Network Connections?
Its no good having a fancy server if nobody can connect to it, so as a result heavy investment has gone into getting access to your data quickly via quality connections.
Each cabinet has its own Gigabit Fiber hand-off provided by Voxel meaning that there is always a quick, easy connection to your data.
